Socially unsocial

By now regulars should be aware of my aversion (somewhat) to the “social networking” toys of today. I am sorry, but I am not fully a believer. I have not bought the hype. From the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, the word “social” is described as:

  1. Involving allies or confederates.
  2. Marked by or passed in pleasant companionship with friends or associates.
  3. Of or relating to human society, the interaction of the individual and the group, or the welfare of human beings as members of society.

You get the picture. Well certainly many on the social network have not. Too often have we witnessed or experienced less than social behaviour via the toys. Nothing irks me more than misuse of mobile phones to the extent where it annoys. Why do people go to a show (cinema or stage) and insist of having conversations on the phone during the show. Stay home and do that! Why must people talk all their private matters very publicly in the taxi over their phones? Why do people speak so loudly into their phones despite the fact that because of the sensitivity of the microphone, the listener can hear a dog barking two blocks away. Why? Because the instruments are smart but the users are not.

Well, it seems that the world has had enough. Recently, a woman was removed from an AMTRAK train for talking loudly in a quiet designated area of the train. Watch on YouTube.

Hooray to them!

A group highlights those “mannerless” folks with viral videos of “Annoying Cell Phone Guy” with an over-sized phone speaking loudly into it in public spaces.

I love these people who are taking action against the nuisance.

To see more of “Annoying Cell Phone Guy” doing his thing in places he absolutely should not, go to the aptly named site www.pleaseshutup.com where they focus on phone etiquette and dealing with those who don’t know how to use their social device properly, not to mention videos and pictures of  offenders committing the act.
